A. Perry Ltd enters its second century by focusing on product development, partnerships, and operational investment

Markets never stand still. In manufacturing and distribution, demand shifts and materials change. Customers now look for products that save installation time and last longer. Suppliers working through merchants need to move quickly and maintain a consistent supply. That tension shapes the environment in which A. Perry Ltd (A. Perry) operates.

Guy Perry, Managing Director of A. Perry, stands right in the middle of that balance. As a fourth-generation leader, he connects the company’s history with today’s decisions. He leads a business that grows through product development as much as through scale expansion. That responsibility means a lot in a market that hasn’t always kept pace. “We’re now into our 101st year as a fourth-generation family business, and we keep growing through product development. The market’s been fairly flat over the last 12 to 18 months, but we’ve boosted turnover and margins by launching new products and moving into adjacent markets,” Guy shares.

The way the business is set up supports this approach. A. Perry supplies agricultural, fencing, and building merchants. The team develops products and manages everything from manufacturing and sourcing to distribution, ensuring supply consistently meets customer demand.

Innovation focus

Guy puts innovation at the heart of daily business, not as a separate department. It guides where the company invests time and resources. “Innovation sits at the core of our growth strategy. We don’t rely on legacy products. We focus on developing solutions that solve real customer challenges,” Guy highlights.

This mindset shapes how A. Perry builds its product ranges. The team brings out new products to meet customer needs and discovers fresh opportunities. Guy points to previous launches as evidence. “Our most successful growth stemmed from first-to-market innovation. Our steel sleeper bracket range launched 2024, for example, has been supplied into over 900 retailers and continues to expand,” he shares. A. Perry works closely with customers to spot demand early, shortening the path from concept to market and making sure development matches what customers want.

Product pipeline

The QuickClip fencing system shows this approach in action. The original idea didn’t come from inside the business. “The idea came from working closely with a major agricultural merchant that saw a gap for an alternative to timber fence posts,” Guy recalls. Timber posts mean regular replacement and cost. The team set out to design a steel alternative that can last for decades without any maintenance. The first version worked, but it wasn’t as efficient. “We developed a prototype steel system, but it needed external clips and wasn’t as efficient to install,” he explains.

That result led to more development. The team spent over two years fine-tuning the design before launching QuickClip at the end of 2025. The final system is all about easy installation and long-lasting durability. “QuickClip brings several advantages. It uses a one-piece extruded high-tensile steel profile, which removes weld points and improves strength. The galvanizing is almost double the thickness of alternative products on the market, which allows us to offer a 40-year guarantee. Installation is much faster because of the integrated stainless-steel clip, so there’s no need for separate fittings,” Guy explains. The design makes installation easier and extends the product’s life. It also cuts down the steps in the field and changes the replacement cycle for end users.

Development doesn’t stop after launch. A. Perry is rolling out variations for different uses and expanding into related categories, such as landscaping brackets and garden products. Guy connects this back to the company’s approach. “We take a very collaborative approach to R&D. We either develop products with key customers or test ideas with them early on.” This model links design directly to market demand. “We also use the experience we have in-house, with people who have been with us for decades,” Guy adds.

Operational change

Product development needs strong operational support. A. Perry has invested in systems and infrastructure to support its plans. Over the past year, it put £300,000 into IT upgrades, including a move to Microsoft Business Central. “It wasn’t easy, but it’s delivered a lot of efficiency gains. Our teams now process orders faster and with fewer errors, so we can serve customers more reliably,” Guy remarks.

With the system upgrades, A. Perry has partnered with the Bowe Group to expand automation. Its warehouse uses robotics to pick orders, boosting both speed and accuracy. These efficiencies allow the business to commit to same-day dispatch, with Standard Motor Transport handling delivery into merchants across the UK. The combination supports the consistent supply customers rely on. These improvements are part of a bigger focus on process and using data more effectively. “The next step for us is AI. We’re putting a lot of focus into how we can use it across sales, customer service, marketing, and internal processes,” Guy shares. These developments support scale without corresponding increases in headcount and provide decision-making tools across the business.

Physical investment is another key part of the strategy. A. Perry bought a neighboring site and redeveloped it to expand space and launch new projects. The team also set up a business hub with storage units and offices. “That redevelopment gives us more operational capacity and creates another revenue stream through rentals,” Guy says. The site meets current needs and leaves room for future growth, showing a broader approach to how the business uses assets.

Leadership approach

Guy’s role brings together product, operations, and customer engagement. He leads a business where different teams work together, all guided by consistency and focus. “Our long-term success comes down to consistency in innovation, strong partnerships with customers, and a willingness to invest,” he confirms.

That outlook balances continuity with change. A. Perry draws on knowledge built over time as it adapts to new demands. Relationships remain central in the group’s direction. “We want to strengthen relationships with key customers and grow our share in those markets,” Guy notes. A. Perry focuses on core segments, particularly agricultural and fencing merchants, where it sees scope for expansion.

The group plans to increase visibility and drive growth in core markets. Its focus is on building awareness of The QuickClip Fencing System and expanding its adoption. “Our priority is to maximize our product ranges,” Guy states.

Market conditions remain mixed, but Guy focuses on execution. “Even in a challenging market, we’re confident in our approach and expect to keep growing through innovation,” Guy concludes. The business continues to align product development with operations and customer demand, maintaining a clear direction as it moves through its second century. www.perrytrade.co.uk
