ABB has reinforced its position as a leader in electrification and grid technology with the opening of a $40 million manufacturing facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This 90,000-square-foot facility marks a strategic milestone in ABB Installation Products’ effort to expand its US manufacturing footprint and deliver advanced energy solutions at scale.

The New Mexico site is built to produce and test some of the company’s most in-demand electrification products. These include Elastimold cable accessories and Fisher Pierce faulted circuit indicators, both central to modernizing the US electric grid. As the energy transition accelerates, ABB’s investment addresses a growing market need for high-performance, domestically produced grid components.

The launch adds to a broader initiative by ABB to enhance production capabilities across North America. The company has invested more than $125 million in manufacturing upgrades over the past five years, solidifying its commitment to innovation and infrastructure development within the region.

Doubling production capacity for a more resilient electric grid

With the need for reliable, efficient, and climate-resilient infrastructure growing rapidly, ABB’s new facility significantly increases the production of components used by electric utilities across the US. The Albuquerque site alone doubles the company’s output of Elastimold cable accessories, which are critical to underground power systems and grid protection.

These components improve outage response and strengthen service reliability during natural disasters and periods of high demand. By locating the new manufacturing center closer to end markets, ABB can reduce delivery timelines and increase availability for its utility partners.

Supporting energy transition with localized supply chains

As electrification becomes central to economic and environmental strategy, ABB is responding by localizing production. The Albuquerque facility strengthens ABB’s ability to serve US customers by reducing dependence on long-distance supply chains.

This model increases control over quality and responsiveness, helping meet the technical and logistical needs of utility clients, infrastructure contractors, and renewable developers. ABB’s decision to scale production in the US also reflects broader trends in reshoring, where advanced manufacturing capabilities are prioritized for national resilience.

Economic and workforce development in New Mexico

Beyond its industrial impact, ABB’s investment is a catalyst for regional growth. The facility brings more than 150 new full-time jobs across engineering, operations, and support functions in Albuquerque. These roles contribute to the state’s growing base of advanced manufacturing and clean energy employment.

ABB is also working with local training programs and technical colleges to build a pipeline of future talent. The New Mexico expansion supports ABB’s long-range plan to grow its presence in North America. With 7,000 employees across 40 sites, ABB Installation Products plays a central role in delivering solutions that power cities, utilities, and industries.

President Khalid Mandri noted the company’s focus on helping customers meet rising electricity demand while improving safety and performance. ABB’s investments are built around automation, reliability, and energy efficiency.
