Boasting a century-long legacy, NJM Packaging pushes the boundaries of industry innovation and customer care

For more than 100 years, NJM Packaging (NJM) has been a trusted leader in automated packaging systems, providing innovative manufacturing, integration, and support solutions to customers across a wide range of industries. With deep expertise in pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, vitamin, personal care, food and beverage, and contract packaging applications, the company delivers comprehensive solutions designed to optimize efficiency, reliability, and production performance.

Combining in-house manufacturing capabilities with equipment from leading packaging technology partners, NJM offers a complete portfolio of packaging line solutions tailored to each customer’s unique operational needs, serving as a single-source provider for fully integrated packaging lines.

“NJM has a long history,” Mark Laroche, Vice President of Sales at NJM, begins. “We were founded in 1915 and got started because there was an embargo on machinery for World War One. The US was importing shoe box labelers at the time but, because there was an import ban from Germany, the US government asked our founder to manufacture the machinery for them instead. In the 1930s, we then started to work with the pharmaceutical industry. We soon became a founding member of the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (the PMMI), which now runs multiple Pack Expo shows.

“In the 1960s, because of our continued involvement in the pharmaceutical sector, we came up with the first predecessor for the barcode industry, as mislabeling was starting to become a big problem,” he continues. “Since then, we’ve continued to evolve. We now manufacture and distribute machines, carrying the full scope of pharmaceutical and nutraceutical packaging lines – everything from bottle unscramblers and desiccant feeders to tablet fillers, capping machines, and labeling.”

As NJM continued to expand its capabilities and strengthen its position within the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical markets, the company reached a pivotal stage in its growth. Increasing customer demands for global support, broader service capabilities, and scalable infrastructure highlighted the need for a larger strategic partner, leading NJM into its next chapter with ProMach Group.

“In 2016, NJM was acquired by ProMach Group. We were a smaller family-owned business prior to that acquisition and, while we were growing, we weren’t growing at the speed that our customers demanded. Our larger customers, in particular, required worldwide service and support, as well as the financial backing of a larger corporation. I had my reservations about whether a large corporation would still really care about our customer base and values, but ProMach has been very good with that,” Mark reveals. “They’ve been excellent at handling all our core competencies and providing that support, which gives us the ability to focus on what our customers really want and need. Across the Group, I also have 50+ other Vice Presidents of Sales that I can reach out to learn and share new practices, which is amazing.”

Advanced manufacturing

What distinguishes NJM within the packaging industry is its ability to combine advanced manufacturing capabilities, exclusive distribution partnerships, and comprehensive line integration expertise under one roof. Through dedicated project management, rigorous quality oversight, and continuous customer collaboration, the company ensures seamless implementation, on-time delivery, and production-ready solutions tailored to each customer’s operational requirements.

“NJM is really unique: we’re a manufacturer, distributor, and integrator,” Mark elaborates. “Those three competencies usually stand on their own, so we’ve differentiated ourselves by providing turnkey integrations since the 1960s. Our approach is centered around working closely with our customers to understand what they need, then assist them with products that can add value. Sometimes, we’ll integrate lines that don’t feature any of our manufactured equipment. Our technicians are factory trained experts on NJM manufactured equipment and offer a first line of defense on third party equipment, this allows our technicians to have an overview of the entire line and offer industry leady support to our customers.”

Through this approach, NJM has engineered a number of industry-altering innovations, including its new Unisplice™ 413 automatic label splicing system, the first solution of its kind designed to eliminate downtime during label roll changes. Compatible with both NJM and third-party pressure-sensitive labelers, the system automatically detects when a label roll is ending, then cuts and seamlessly splices a new roll without interrupting production. By removing the need for operators to stop machines for manual roll changes, Unisplice can improve overall equipment effectiveness by more than ten percent while delivering rapid ROI. Designed for industries including pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, personal care, food, and medical devices, the system handles label rolls up to 18 inches in diameter and supports speeds up to 3,000 inches of label web per minute with optional configurations. Additional features such as vacuum-assisted alignment, smart operator alerts, automatic waste collection, and an intuitive touchscreen interface further enhance productivity, ease of use, and operational efficiency.

From pioneering early labeling technologies to introducing cutting-edge systems like the Unisplice™ 413, the company’s commitment to efficiency, reliability, and operational excellence remains at the core of its success. Backed by the global strength of ProMach Group and driven by a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement, NJM is well-positioned to help manufacturers navigate the future of packaging with confidence, agility, and innovation.

“In 2025, we set our all-time sales record, so we’re trying to keep up that momentum. We’re seeing a trend where a lot of manufacturing is being reshored back to the US, meaning that there’s been significant investments made into packaging lines, so it’s going to be a busy year for us. From an R&D perspective, we’re continuing to collaborate with corporations to see how AI can be best utilized within our operations,” Mark concludes.

With more than a century of innovation behind it, NJM Packaging continues to evolve alongside the industries it serves. Through its focus on customer collaboration, advanced automation, and continuous innovation, the company remains at the forefront of the packaging industry’s evolving needs, where it’ll be firmly positioned for many more decades to come.
