Explore Det-Tronics’ deliberate expansion from oil and gas into hydrogen, LNG, and mission-critical infrastructure worldwide
For over 50 years, Det-Tronics has been operating in the mission-critical and life-safety space, focusing on gas and fire detection as well as complete integrated systems designed to holistically protect both assets and people. Built on a foundation of innovation, the company established itself with a breakthrough in flame detection before expanding into gas detection and ultimately developing a full automation platform capable of making an entire site comprehensively safe.

Det-Tronics engineers its solutions for high reliability, fail-safe operation and exceptional resistance to false alarms, helping customers maintain a high level of safety while minimizing unnecessary downtime, service interventions and operating costs. Beyond detection performance, the systems are designed with installation and commissioning in mind, thus simplifying deployment, reducing installation time and helping customers bring their safety systems online quickly and efficiently. Through this combination of reliability, ease of installation and streamlined commissioning, the company offers greater operational confidence while reducing the time and resources required to implement critical safety protection. Johannes Mario Kahlert (Mario), CEO and President, explains the breadth of the sectors the company serves.
“A lot of people assume that our business is primarily oil and gas, and while that sector is certainly critical to us, it is only one aspect of what we do: indeed, about half of our business. The other half sits in what I would describe as mission critical growth areas, including clean energy, industrial and manufacturing facilities, utilities and defense applications. Anywhere there are fire or gases that need to be detected very fast, we have a role to play. Increasingly, that includes data centers and energy generation facilities, where protecting critical infrastructure is becoming ever more critical going forward,” he opens.
Alongside that growing market presence, Det-Tronics is currently in the middle of a strategic transformation journey, something Mario is keen to discuss. “Our transformation is built around a strategic master plan captured in the phrase ‘We Create Det-Tronics,’ with ‘we’ being the employees. It has four pillars: operational excellence, innovation, growth with customer focus, and people and culture. Over the last ten months, we have also rolled out a comprehensive operating model in which the leadership team conducts deep and thorough monthly performance reviews across operations, sales, portfolio and financial performance, alongside a monthly masterplan session focused on mid-to-long-term strategy. This has resulted in a multitude of improvements across the business that our customers can feel directly. One of the most significant outcomes has been a significant reduction in lead times and a return to timely order fulfilment.”
To back that transformation, Det-Tronics has made substantial capital investment across three areas since Mario joined the company. The first has been acquisitions. In the last 12 months, Det-Tronics has acquired two businesses: one strengthening its mid-range market gas detection portfolio with the acquisition of Texas based R.C. Systems, and the other representing a more technology-focused play through the acquisition of Optronics in Norway. Both support the strategy’s focus on customer growth and innovation, with international expansion now extending its reach beyond its original regional markets. The second investment area has been research and development, where capacity has almost doubled over the past two and a half years, alongside equipment investments to bring production up to the newest standards. The third and most foundational area of investment has been enhancing its process to become best-in-class. Working with external benchmarking experts, the company changed more than 30 processes across its entire order-to-cash workflow and trained the whole organization on those processes. The impact is felt directly by customers in the form of faster, more reliable service.
Balancing that internal transformation with external market expansion is key as the company grows its presence in clean energy applications like LNG, carbon capture and hydrogen. “These are not new markets for us,” Mario emphasizes. “We have always holistically protected sites onshore and offshore, whether vessels transporting gas, refineries or production facilities. LNG is a clear growth market and one we have been building on for some time with a defined growth strategy. It is not a market we just discovered; it is a space where we have already experienced significant growth. What we are also tracking closely is how gases like hydrogen are beginning to flow into turbines and other infrastructure, which changes the technical requirements and opens up new applications. Given the current geopolitical environment, I do not see this market weakening over the next ten years. It is one of our defined growth pockets and we are fully committed to it,” he continues.

On the product side, the company has recently launched the U5015 ClearView 3D™ Explosion-Proof Smoke Detector, a significant new addition to its portfolio. Released in July 2026, ClearView meets current NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code standards and carries FM Approvals. It introduces faster response times, superior false alarm rejection and greater ease of upgrade across existing installations. Moreover, it is largely maintenance-free and self-supervising, thereby reducing the effort required from site teams and minimizing false alarms.
The pace of internationalization is accelerating alongside these product launches. In 2025, Det-Tronics began assembly manufacturing outside the US for the first time in its history, through a partnership with Rawabi in Saudi Arabia. “The same year, we acquired R.C. Systems, a Texas-based gas detection company founded in 1979 and known for developing the first through-the-window interface for a gas detection transmitter, which eliminates the need to remove the lid for calibration in hazardous environments. For over 45 years, R.C. Systems has continued to innovate and develop expert solutions for its customers, including a wide range of detectors, controllers, wireless solutions and sampling systems. On another note, we will also be exhibiting at major global energy events this fall, including Gastech in Bangkok and ADIPEC in Abu Dhabi, reinforcing our growing international presence,” Mario shares.
The global energy industry is transforming as industrial power generation facilities integrate renewable energy, high-efficiency gas turbines, carbon capture technologies and advanced grid systems to improve reliability and reduce emissions. At the same time, digital monitoring, predictive maintenance and energy storage solutions are helping power producers optimize plant performance while lowering operating costs and meeting growing demand for cleaner energy. Det-Tronics is at the forefront of creating total safety solutions in these environments and serving as influential thought leaders to customers and the energy production community at large.
“For all the technology, business improvements and hard facts, the real asset of a company – and the real driver of change – is its people and its culture,” Mario concludes. “That’s why it is one of our strategic pillars. We bring in new talent, engage our people and make sure everyone understands the direction we are taking. For me, that is the real game changer in making a business successful: having a team that is engaged, aligned and committed to the same goal. It’s something that can easily get overlooked in very technical discussions, but we put our people and the team firmly at the center of what we do.”
