From small-scale innovations to global leaders: how Cleveland Cascades Ltd redefines high-performance bulk loading technology worldwide

From an internal engineering solution to a global leader in high-performance loading chute systems, Cleveland Cascades Ltd (Cleveland Cascades) has grown from a niche invention into an internationally trusted name in bulk loading technology. Evolved from humble roots, the private company began with Cleveland Potash Ltd, where the need for a high-capacity loading chute that could effectively control dust pollution sparked its first innovation. The challenge led to the development of the pioneering Cascade concept, an ingenious system that regulates the velocity and flow of material during loading operations. In 2004, one of the original inventors of this system established Cleveland Cascades Ltd to further develop and market the technology on a global scale, and the company has continued to go from strength to strength ever since.

Today, the business operates from a 50,000 sq ft facility in Northeast England, housing manufacturing and assembly workshops, secure external storage, and dedicated engineering and support offices. The site functions as a bespoke production hub for the design and manufacture of a comprehensive range of bulk loading chutes.

As Cleveland Cascades continues to grow, innovation remains central to its success, underpinned by a commitment to excellence across every aspect of the business. Manufacturing Today sits down with Shane Barnes, Commercial Manager at Cleveland Cascades, to learn more about the organization’s current operations and uncover what its future holds. He begins our conversation by elaborating on the company’s geographical reach and approach to client collaboration.

“With more than 750 installations across over 100 countries, we have a global reach for our customers, with representatives located in South America, Italy, and Spain, along with dedicated distributors in Australia and Dubai to service the Middle Eastern region,” Shane elaborates. “We also work closely with many ship loader suppliers who are based across the globe with projects in North America, Europe, and Asia.

“Each of our systems is designed bespoke to the needs of each client’s application. We work closely with our customers’ own engineers to ensure that the design meets the requirements for each project, and we have dedicated Mechanical and Electrical design teams to provide a detailed specification for each project. We also regularly attend trade shows and conduct customer visits to allow us to remain informed in the global markets.”

Cascade Systems

As Shane says, Cleveland Cascades’ product range is designed to provide efficient and controlled handling of bulk materials across a wide variety of industrial applications. The company’s Cascade Systems, for instance, use an innovative arrangement of inclined cones to manage the descent of dry bulk material, significantly reducing dust emissions at source whilst also minimizing product segregation and degradation. In addition to this controlled-flow technology, Cleveland Cascades also offers a range of Free Fall Chutes suitable for diverse operational requirements, ensuring versatility beyond the Cascade systems. For tanker operations, its Tanker Loading Chutes (TL Series) incorporate a vertical cone design similar to that used in the C Series Free Fall Chute. This system is particularly effective for loading enclosed tanker spaces, featuring a fully sealed closure cone that securely connects to the tanker inlet to maintain containment and improve operational safety.

With its expansive portfolio and custom capabilities, Cleveland Cascades has played a major role in some of the industry’s most dynamic projects. One particularly exciting project for the company is situated in Long Beach, California. As part of the development, Cleveland Cascades is completing the manufacturing for an order to supply both a Free Fall and a Cascade System to the Port of Long Beach. Together, the two systems are expected to facilitate the loading of approximately six million tons per year. A key feature of the project is its shared fixed head chute with independent pivoting head chutes, allowing either system to be selected on a common boom depending on material requirements while also enabling compact stowage. Each system includes independent winches for vertical movement, and the overall design provides the customer with a flexible, interchangeable solution between free-fall and cascade loading modes.

Whatever the project at hand, however, Cleveland Cascades is committed to conducting itself with the highest standards of quality and integrity. This commitment goes beyond its approach to customer service and project delivery, but rather embedded within every facet of its operations. Sustainability, in particular, forms a key part of this ethos.

“Cleveland Cascades is committed to improving its environmental impact and addressing climate-related risks throughout our operations, creating a safe workplace that adheres to a high standard of business ethics. We believe that this will create motivated employees and satisfied customers, which are essential to sustained profitable growth,” Shane emphasizes. “In our aim to be greener, we monitor our sustainability performance and progress against objectives and targets, review performance annually, and continually strive to improve. We use diligence when selecting suppliers, ensuring they have similar environmental practices to ourselves. We identify any risk of pollution arising from our activities and eliminate or reduce in line with legislation and regulatory requirements.”

From its origins as an internal engineering breakthrough to its position today as a globally recognized specialist with installations in more than 100 countries, Cleveland Cascades’ journey is a testament to the power of technical ingenuity and customer-centric collaboration. By combining bespoke engineering expertise with an ongoing commitment to sustainability, Cleveland Cascades is well-positioned for continued international growth. As major projects such as the Port of Long Beach development demonstrate, the company remains focused on pushing the boundaries of bulk material handling technology while staying true to the principles of quality, innovation, and environmental responsibility that have defined its success for more than two decades.

“We have several interesting prospects that are nearing an order stage, which means that 2026 will be a busy year for our design and manufacturing teams. We also have several projects that have been completed and delivered that are now due to be installed and commissioned ready for service, which will keep our site engineers very busy. We expect to have site work in the USA, India, the UAE, and Europe across the remainder of the year,” Shane affirms, concluding our conversation. “We’ve sold approximately 1000 systems globally and our aim is to continue to grow this number, along with the scale of the company, to meet the needs of the expanding customer base for the requirement of spares and new systems.”
