From UK manufacturer to global clinical partner: Flexicare’s advancement in medical device manufacturing and responsible growth

For more than three decades, Flexicare Group (Flexicare) has been driven by one clear purpose: supporting clinicians with dependable medical devices that they, and their patients, can rely on every day. Founded in 1989, the group has grown into a global leader in airway management and respiratory solutions, while remaining firmly rooted in clinical insight, practical innovation, and a commitment to quality without compromise.

Flexicare designs, manufactures, and distributes products that meet the requirements of modern healthcare. With over 15 global subsidiaries and distribution across more than 100 countries, the group combines global capability with local expertise, ensuring that its solutions meet rigorous regulatory standards, and also respond to the needs of healthcare professionals and patients worldwide. What sets Flexicare apart is its consistent focus on meeting global market needs with care and agility.

Flexicare is entering its next phase of development strengthening its role as a trusted global partner to clinicians and healthcare providers. Manufacturing Today sits down with Marc Davies, Chief Operations Officer at Flexicare, to explore the company’s growth journey, its approach to responsible manufacturing, and the values shaping its continued progress in today’s medical device market.

“Flexicare was incorporated in 1989 by our Founder, Ghassem Poormand, who is still actively involved in the business and continues to bring his passion and knowledge to our growth and development,” Marc begins. “When we first started, we focused predominantly on the UK market performing contract manufacturing for other healthcare organizations. Over the last 37 years, we’ve expanded internationally and focused on developing and maintaining our own product portfolio. In 2017, we acquired a European business called Medisize, having identified that we wanted to expand further in the EU. After that, in 2023, we acquired Clark Clement International, which brought the respiratory technique product range to our portfolio.

“Today, Flexicare is an end-to-end, vertically integrated global medical device business. Performing the initial design of all our devices, along with the regulatory and quality assurance work required to bring new products to market. We then manufacture in-house and supply directly to our global territories. The majority of our revenue is generated outside of the UK, and we have one of the widest ranges of medical device portfolios in the market. Our main product areas are within airway management and respiratory solutions, and we also sell products across anesthesia, critical care, respiratory technique and urology,

“Ten years ago, we achieved just over  £25 million revenue; and in our last published accounts, we delivered £111 million,” he reveals. “We’re proud that our revenue growth has been achieved through a mixture of organic and acquisitions. The US, and our largest market, for instance, has been developed almost fully organically.”

Growth

As Flexicare has continued to grow, it recognizes the importance of ensuring that its identity evolves in tandem. With teams, customers, and healthcare systems spanning multiple regions and cultures, defining a clear and unified purpose has become an essential part of shaping the group’s future direction.

“As a business develops, what worked ten years ago might not necessarily be the same as what works now especially given the scale of our revenue growth. Therefore, as a team, we’ve spent a lot of time internally redefining our corporate narrative,” Marc elaborates. “We began by looking at the global values within our business. As a UK-headquartered business, we’re conscious of the fact that we operate in lots of different cultures and so need a global set of values that really define our vision and mission.

“Our redefined vision is ‘to improve lives worldwide through clinically trusted and progressive medical device solutions’. We wanted it to reflect the impact that our products have on a global scale. Ultimately, we want to be clinically trusted by the people who use our products. Finally, we are progressive: we’ve invested in an active R&D department so we can adapt when markets and clinical practices change. Our mission is ‘to design and deliver quality medical devices that clinicians trust and patients rely on globally, acting with agility and care’. We’re very conscious that our patients rely on our products, not just clinicians. Then finally our agility: we’re a privately owned business with the dynamics to adapt quickly.”

Another key growth-driver for the business is its continued investment in technology. This is where Flexicare’s private ownership boasts another key strength: the profit that the group generates is reinvested back into the business. Over recent years, for instance, the organization has proudly invested in a number of different tech platforms that will help to position it for further growth: one such platform is Windchill (a product lifecycle management system) working with PLM Central. This system is helping Flexicare to be more agile, efficient, and accurate with its products and processes. Additionally, Flexicare is currently exploring opportunities to implement AI into its operations. An example of this is its collaboration with NetStock, a platform that sits atop its ERP system to assist with forecasting.

Both systems represent two examples of how Flexicare is investing in technology. Over recent years, the group has also invested heavily in amplifying its ESG efforts, an initiative that has led to it being Highly Commended for the ESG Excellence of the Year Award at the Finance Awards Wales 2026.

“In late 2024, we decided to supercharge our ESG activities, not just because there’s a growing demand for it, but because it’s the right thing to do,” Marc explains. “In early 2025, we brought in a dedicated ESG Lead and, for the 12 months that they have been with the business, they have made a ginormous impact. Last year we partnered with EcoVadis, a well-known ESG rating system, and were awarded the ‘Committed’ badge, which is an independent demonstration of the journey we are on and the plan we have in place. A lot of our ESG strategy is based around reducing our environmental impact. For instance, we’ve recently changed our HQ’s electricity supplier to Hydro Wales, which is a hydropower plant in North Wales. It’s been a big step forward for us to shift fully in the UK to renewable energy.

“ESG, however, is not just about sustainability, but also respect for our communities an wider stakeholders. Another initiative recently implemented was our first-ever Flexicare Global Volunteering Day, where we encouraged all our employees across the world the opportunity to give back to their local communities.”

As Flexicare looks to the future, its ambition is clear: to keep pushing boundaries in global medical device markets while staying true to the principles that have defined the business since 1989. With continued investment in technology, sustainability, product development, and people, the group continues to strengthen its global presence whilst reinforcing its position as a trusted partner to clinicians and patients worldwide. Flexicare is proving that long-term success is built not just on growth, but on purpose, agility, care and trust.

“Internally, we’ve set ourselves ambitious growth targets that we are driven to deliver. We will continue to focus on our previous levers of growth around geographic expansion and product development, including through new products that we’re excited to be launching in the near future.” Concluding our conversation and optimistic for the years ahead, Marc emphasizes, “I want us to continue to grow by being a product, market and people led-business, with the appreciation that we’re excelling in our vision and mission in providing products that clinicians trust and patients rely on.”
