How Abstrax pairs flavor innovation with operational excellence to fuel rapid growth

Founded in 2017, Abstrax has quickly grown into one of the industry’s most innovative botanical ingredient manufacturers, combining analytical chemistry, sensory science, and advanced manufacturing to help brands create differentiated products across food, beverage, brewing, and consumer packaged goods industries.

The company’s scientific foundation was built by decoding the chemistry behind some of nature’s most complex botanical aromas, creating proprietary technologies that continue to power its innovation across multiple industries today. Nearly a decade on, the company develops and manufactures flavor systems, terpene blends, botanical extracts, and functional ingredients through its expanding Flavors business for customers across food and beverage, brewing, nutraceuticals, and other consumer packaged goods markets.

“We’re not a traditional flavor house,” says Eric Rosas, Chief Operating Officer. “We combine analytical chemistry, sensory science, product development, and scalable manufacturing to help our customers bring differentiated products to market faster.”

Rather than expanding through acquisition or chasing market trends, the company has entered new categories by applying its scientific expertise to new botanical ingredients. “We’re a very curious, scientist-driven organization,” Eric shares. “When we looked at the hop, for example, we saw an opportunity for our research and development (R&D) team to work on identifying what we can develop or extract out of hops. It’s that level of curiosity that has driven us toward different products. That same scientific platform has allowed Abstrax to expand into entirely new markets while remaining true to its core expertise.”

Alongside its core offering, Abstrax also provides R&D services and regulatory support for its customers. “Our R&D team pairs PhD-level chemists with advanced analytical techniques and sensory science, aiming to identify and recreate complex botanical flavor and aroma profiles,” Eric says. “That scientific foundation is paired with rapid prototyping, applications development, and close collaboration with customers. The result is an innovation process that moves quickly while remaining grounded in data while ensuring new products can be manufactured efficiently, consistently, and at commercial scale.”

On a more personal note, Eric brings extensive manufacturing experience to Abstrax, having spent three decades working with world-class manufacturing techniques such as lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, and Six Sigma. “I use those as a toolbox rather than implementing a single system,” he says. “I take from all those disciplines and use the appropriate tools for the issues that need to be solved. I’ve always been drawn to organizations experiencing rapid growth, where operational excellence can create a competitive advantage. Abstrax presented a unique opportunity: a very strong innovation culture with significant growth potential. Developing the operational infrastructure, systems, and teams necessary to support that growth, while maintaining quality, efficiency, and an exceptional customer experience, is what I thrive on.”

Recognition as both one of the Inc. 5000’s fastest-growing companies and one of Fast Company’s World’s Most Innovative Companies has accelerated Abstrax’s next phase of investment. With growth comes a familiar manufacturing challenge: increasing capacity while maintaining quality, consistency, and speed. “There’s a lot of know-how behind what we do,” Eric states when asked about the company’s growth. “We’ve got a very strong foundation in science and innovation that allows us to develop products our competitors can’t simply replicate. Over the years, we’ve developed deep partnerships with our customers, and we’ve invested heavily in building a scalable manufacturing operation. That includes expanding our production capabilities, investing in automation, strengthening our supply chain, and implementing systems that allow us to continue to grow efficiently.”

At the center of that investment strategy is Abstrax’s new Innovation Center, a purpose-built headquarters designed to bring research, product development, manufacturing, quality, and customer collaboration together under one roof. Far more than additional square footage, the facility creates a fully integrated environment where ideas move more quickly from research into commercial production. Eric confirms: “It will significantly expand our manufacturing capacity while bringing operations together under one roof. Beyond increasing production capacity, it will also improve collaboration between R&D, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain, providing the infrastructure needed to support automation, improve efficiency, and deliver a better experience for both our employees and our customers. The build-out is progressing well: the R&D and quality sections are due for completion by the end of July 2026, the manufacturing portion by September, and full occupancy by the fourth quarter of the year.”

Designed around collaboration between R&D, quality, manufacturing, and customer applications, the Innovation Center will help accelerate product development while improving manufacturing efficiency and consistency. Working with German engineering partner FRICKE, Abstrax is implementing automated liquid dosing and compounding systems, with the first unit already received in California and the second in transit. The automated systems will improve dosing accuracy, repeatability, quality control, traceability, and production efficiency while supporting continued growth. “This isn’t about replacing people,” Eric stresses. “It’s about allowing them to focus on higher-value activities while creating a more scalable manufacturing platform, reducing our process times and decreasing lead times to our customers.”

Aside from equipment, Abstrax is also investing in its internal processes to support its growth. “I’m focused on creating a transparent organization,” Eric shares. “We’re adding a new ERP platform to enable greater visibility; a new sales and operations planning process to sharpen our view of customer demand; and a customer experience center within our site. Together, these investments provide better visibility across the organization, helping teams make faster decisions while creating a more responsive experience for customers.”

With strategic investments underway, Abstrax is in a strong position to meet evolving consumer trends. “Consumers increasingly expect products made with natural ingredients, cleaner labels, and functional benefits. Those trends are creating significant opportunities for brands looking for ingredients that help them stand apart,” Eric observes. “We’re seeing rapid growth in functional beverages, botanical wellness, and alcohol alternatives. People aren’t drinking as much alcohol as they used to, and we want non-alcoholic beer to taste as close to a regular beer as possible. People want ingredient transparency, but at the same time the industry is looking for sustainable, consistent, and efficient ingredient solutions.

“We want to become a global leader in botanical science and technology,” Eric concludes. “We’ll continue to expand internationally, broaden our presence across multiple industries, and establish ourselves as a strategic innovation partner, not just an ingredient supplier. Innovation only matters if you can manufacture it consistently at scale. That’s why we’re investing so heavily in our people, automation, technology, and infrastructure. We believe the Innovation Center is just the beginning of what’s possible, and we’re building the manufacturing platform that will support the next generation of botanical innovation.”
