How Elos Medtech is redefining collaboration and driving innovation across the medical device industry
Empowering medical device companies with expert support across product R&D, manufacturing solutions, and value-added services, Elos Medtech helps customers enhance their product offerings while streamlining operations and reducing complexity. The company’s integrated processes, from design to manufacturing and final packaging, focus on developing innovative medical devices and solutions that enhance patients’ lives.
The Elos Medtech Group traces its origins to Sweden, in the late 19th century, with the subsequent establishment of AB Götene Träindustri in 1923, which initially operated in the wood processing industry. Leveraging its expertise in precision engineering, the company entered the medical device and healthcare market in the 1950s. Throughout the 2000s, the business (then known as Westergyllen) focused on medical technology, acquiring several businesses and divesting the metrology division in 2014. In December 2023, Elos Medtech acquired Klingel Group, which prompted a restructuring of the business into four market focused business units – orthopedics, dental, advanced surgical, and precision – and three technology focused divisions: Elos Medical Polymer Solutions, Elos Sterile Packaging Solutions, and Elos Medical Value Solutions. Today, Elos Medtech operates across 13 locations in five countries and employs nearly 1500 people, continuing to drive innovation in medical technology.
Jodie Gilmore, Chief Marketing Officer, joins us to elaborate on the company’s new structure and its approach to medical innovation. “Elos Medtech operates primarily as a contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), and in some cases, we offer our own OEM level products and solutions,” Jodie begins. “Our four business units serve market specific customers and deliver vertical solutions, ensuring that each customer receives tailored expertise and integrated service at every level of collaboration.
“Within the dental segment, Elos is a trusted partner to the world’s leading dental implant companies. With over 40 years of experience in the dental implantology industry, Elos has established itself as a key value-adding collaborator. By engaging early in customers’ development projects, Elos focuses on developing and manufacturing implants, prosthetic components, and instruments. As a pioneer in digital workflows, the Elos Accurate® portfolio offers a comprehensive suite of solutions designed to deliver predictable outcomes throughout the restoration process — from scanning to design and manufacturing.
“As the dental implant market shifts from traditional casting toward milled individualized prosthetics, there is growing demand for open digital workflows. These workflows require comprehensive digital libraries, offering dental professionals the flexibility to create restorations tailored to each patient’s unique needs, ensuring the best possible outcomes.”
“In the orthopedics market,” she continues, “we serve as an extension of our customers’ own business to streamline procedures, accelerate time to market and simplify supply chains. With over 50 years of experience, Elos offers solutions for robot-assisted surgery, implants, complex instrumentation, and consumables, primarily for trauma, extremities, spine, sports medicine and joint reconstruction. From concept to commercialization, Elos provides technical support, manufacturing, and regulatory assistance to efficiently deliver surgery-ready, high-quality orthopedic products.
“We are also a trusted collaborator in the advanced surgical market, supporting customers with enabling technologies and products for navigated and robot-assisted procedures. Our expertise covers cardiovascular, thoracic, urology, neurosurgery, and general surgical applications, with the ability to manage complex geometries and integrate a wide variety of materials including both plastics and metals. These versatile production capabilities allow us to deliver both capital system components and next-generation surgical instruments, strengthening customers’ innovation and product offerings in minimally invasive and technologically sophisticated surgeries.
“Lastly, Elos Medtech’s capabilities in precision technology were significantly expanded with the acquisition of the Klingel Group, which already had over 30 years of expertise as a leading European CMO and CDMO specializing in high-precision manufacturing solutions for the most demanding industries. With a vast range of advanced capabilities including state-of-the-art CNC systems, 3D laser sintering and finishing technologies, we’re experts in developing components with complex requirements from hard-to-machine materials.”
Turning to Elos Medtech’s three technology focused divisions, Elos Sterile Packaging Solutions (SPS) provides validation, sterile packaging, and logistics for medical implants, instruments, and consumables. Elos Medical Polymer Solutions focuses on advanced molding tools and automated injection molding of all thermoplastic parts, as well as offering low-risk solutions for every stage of the injection molding process. Finally, Elos Medical Value Solutions, located in Tianjin, China, boasts expertise in high precision components and assemblies with extensive experience in drug delivery, and collaborates with companies looking to elevate their worldwide reach.
From design insights and product development to regulatory approvals, large scale manufacturing, and delivery logistics, Elos Medtech is an end-to-end solutions partner adapting its capabilities to complement those of its customers. “We understand that our customers need more than just manufacturing; they require business and product portfolio solutions that deliver measurable value throughout the entire product lifecycle,” Jodie explains. “Our technical expertise spans design, development, and regulatory requirements, and we partner closely with medical device companies to take responsibility for both products and supply chains.
“Our expertise streamlines the process of bringing new devices to market. For instance, we recently partnered with a leading orthopedic company on a high-stakes procedure kit family. Through integrated design and regulatory support, we reduced their costs by more than 50 percent, reduced lead time from 40 weeks to ten weeks, and we’re building a program to deliver fully assembled, ready-to-use kits with unmatched efficiency.
“By weaving these capabilities into our solutions, our customers can focus on their core goals while we expertly manage their supply chain and product delivery,” Jodie states. “Our holistic approach to service ensures straightforward product launches and enables efficient scaling as market demands increase, allowing our customers to innovate and grow with confidence.”
Considering the company’s strong heritage, we ask Jodie what factors have been integral to Elos Medtech’s longevity and success. “We’ve built strong, enduring partnerships with our customers, grounded in a shared understanding of market challenges,” she shares. “Another crucial factor is our deliberate specialization in areas where we can deliver differentiated, high-value solutions, allowing us to provide innovative products that evolve with customer needs.
“Quality is the cornerstone of our operations, and our advanced regulatory expertise has been integral in supporting customers across the globe. Overall, I’d say our success is driven by deep customer partnerships, strategic specialization, uncompromising quality, and expert regulatory support, all of which have allowed us to continuously innovate, adapt, and grow alongside our customers.”
Elos Medtech’s journey from its roots in precision engineering to today’s leading market position as a global CDMO and trusted innovation partner truly demonstrates the company’s legacy of adaptability and customer centric approach. Combining specialist market knowledge with advanced manufacturing capabilities and value-added services, Elos Medtech is sure to continue delivering life-enhancing solutions that simplify complexity and shape the future of medical technology across the globe.
