Intelect celebrates nearly 30 years of engineering excellence, innovation, investment and growth across UK industries

For almost 30 years, Intelect has helped process industries keep complex engineering projects moving, from initial design and manufacturing to installation, commissioning, and ongoing maintenance. The company started in 1997 as an electrical contractor serving the food and beverage sector. Since then, Intelect has grown into a multi-discipline engineering business, delivering integrated electrical, mechanical, controls, and automation solutions across the UK and beyond.

Today, Intelect works with clients in the food and beverage, utilities, renewable energy, and heavy industries. The company’s success comes from a blend of technical expertise, investment in people and equipment, and a strong track record of delivering projects safely, on time, and on budget. As Intelect approaches its 30th anniversary, we sat down with Co-Founder and Managing Director Fran Cormican to reflect on the company’s journey and explore the key factors behind its continued growth.

“Engineering projects keep getting more complex, and technology never stands still. When clients hire separate contractors for every discipline, coordination gets tricky, and responsibility and communication can become fragmented,” Fran shares, explaining Intelect’s vertically integrated approach. “Our model takes away much of that complexity by offering a single point of accountability across design, manufacture, installation, commissioning, and maintenance. Because our teams collaborate from the very beginning, communication stays strong, decisions happen quickly, and we solve issues before they turn into problems. That means better quality, less risk, and ultimately more value for our clients. We want to be a true extension of our clients’ business, integrating our services within their operations to ensure the best possible outcome.”

Safety culture

One of the most important parts of Intelect’s strategy is its unique ‘Train to Retain’ model, which focuses on people and ongoing employee development. Intelect is proud to be listed among England’s Top SME Apprenticeship Employers from the period of 2022 to 2025. The company invests not only in its valued apprentices, but also in existing team members who want to grow their knowledge and experience.

“Our philosophy is simple: ‘train to retain.’ We’ve always aimed to train people well, support them throughout their careers, and build an environment where they want to stay and grow,” Fran says. “This approach is at the heart of our success. Many of our senior engineers, managers, and technical specialists started as apprentices and have moved on to lead projects and teams. About 30 percent of our current management team came through our apprenticeship program, which is a number we’re extremely proud of.”

This people-first mindset shows not only in how Intelect develops its teams, but also in the strong safety culture that supports everything the company does. One clear example is commitment to safety. Intelect recently reached 200,000 hours without a lost-time accident. This impressive milestone highlights how much the company values keeping its people safe.

“Safety isn’t just a box we tick; it’s part of how we operate,” Fran notes. “We’ve built a culture where everyone knows that getting home safely to your family comes before any project or deadline. We invest a lot of time in risk assessment, training, and supervision, as well as ensuring people feel confident stopping work if something doesn’t feel right. Hitting 200,000 hours without a lost-time accident is a milestone we’re proud of, but it’s not the finish line. It’s something we’ll keep building on every day.”

New opportunities

This focus on doing things right also shapes how Intelect invests in its people, facilities, and capabilities. As the business has grown and projects have become more complex, these investments have strengthened the company’s offering, ensuring it has the infrastructure and expertise to meet clients’ evolving needs.

“One of our biggest recent investments is our new warehouse facility in Middlesbrough, along with a new machine shop. These are two valuable additions to our services,” Fran shares. “As our projects have grown larger and more complex, we needed infrastructure to support that growth. The new facility gives us far more storage, better logistics, and improved project coordination, helping us deliver more efficiently to clients across the UK. We’ve also continued investing in machinery services and our design and manufacturing teams, making sure we provide clients with a truly integrated solution from concept to installation and ongoing support.”

While these investments strengthen Intelect’s ability to deliver today, they also create a platform for future growth. As the industry evolves, Intelect continues to expand its capabilities and apply its engineering expertise to new opportunities, including projects that support sustainability and the circular economy.

“We’re seeing more clients ask for engineering solutions that boost sustainability and resource efficiency,” Fran observes. “Projects within the circular economy bring exciting challenges, combining mechanical, electrical, automation, and process expertise. These are areas where we excel. While we can’t share details about specific technologies or clients, we’re proud to be part of multi-million-pound projects that help reduce waste and support more sustainable industrial processes. For us, it’s a great example of how engineering can help solve some of society’s biggest challenges.”

Business values

As Intelect nears its 30th anniversary, its journey from a specialist electrical contractor to a multi-discipline engineering business shows how the right mix of people, expertise, and investment leads to lasting growth. By developing its teams, strengthening its capabilities, and embracing opportunities around sustainability and the circular economy, the company is positioned for the next stage of its journey. In Intelect’s third decade, Fran’s hard work and leadership have been recognized with an invitation to apply for a prestigious Business MBE. But he’s quick to shine a light on the business’s most important asset: its people.

“When we started Intelect nearly 30 years ago, we weren’t chasing awards or recognition; we just wanted to get the job done,” Fran reflects. “Our focus has always been on building a business that people are proud to work for and that clients can count on. No business is built by one person. For me, success is about being recognized nationally as one of the UK’s leading integrated engineering companies while staying true to the values we’ve built the business on. I want us to keep working on major projects, developing our people and capabilities, and maintaining the long-term relationships we’ve built with clients.

“Most importantly, I want people to see Intelect as a business that delivers quality, develops talent, and always does the right thing,” Fran concludes. “As we approach our 30th anniversary, it’s a chance to reflect on how far we’ve come, but it’s also about looking ahead. Engineering is changing quickly, and we’re excited to keep evolving alongside our clients while staying true to the principles that have guided us from the start.”
