MSI Viking offers manufacturers a one-stop shop for expert measurement solutions and services

Metrology specialist MSI Viking serves as a leading supplier of precision measuring technologies. As a consultative and collaborative sales and service organization, MSI Viking’s focus is on thoroughly understanding the needs of its customers to ensure its solutions and services can meet their requirements. In addition to its vast range of metrology products, the company offers ISO 17025-accredited calibration, dimensional inspection, and repair services. Moreover, MSI Viking delivers custom engineered solutions by leveraging advanced automation and control systems, machine vision, and robotic technologies.

Dan Carter, President, provides an overview of the company’s services and journey in the industry. “In business for over 57 years, we have evolved into a company exclusively dedicated to precision metrology sales and services. We specialize in helping manufacturers solve complex quality and measurement challenges across industries such as automotive, aerospace, defense, energy, medical devices, and general manufacturing. On the sales side, we offer precision metrology instrumentation ranging from hand tools to the most advanced systems, as well as custom gauge automation solutions. Meanwhile, our services encompass training room at the new MSI Viking Headquarters in Greer, SCcomprehensive calibration, contract inspection, and repair services, ensuring a comprehensive spectrum of solutions for all precision manufacturing needs. Rather than being merely transactional, we view ourselves as solution oriented. Our approach focuses on understanding the full scope of our customers’ problems before addressing them through a structured and formal process to bring together the right technologies and expertise to deliver a tailored and effective solution. With nearly 200 employees operating from five facilities across 13 states, we are uniquely positioned to help manufacturers control process variability, improve yields, enhance quality, and boost profitability. Our partnerships with leading OEMs like Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence (Hexagon), Mahr, Starrett, and Mitutoyo further enable us to meet the evolving demands of precision manufacturing.”

Expanding on the topic of industry collaborations, Dan explains how MSI Viking’s new manufacturing partnership with Hexagon will benefit the organization. “This partnership strengthens our offerings in coordinate metrology, as Hexagon is the global leader of tactile and multi-sensor CMMs, vision measuring systems, portable measuring arms and trackers, 3D scanners, and software and data management tools. As a value-added reseller, we collaborate closely with Hexagon to provide not only advanced metrology products but also comprehensive installation, calibration, and ongoing support services. By combining Hexagon’s leading technology with our expertise in metrology and calibration, we are empowered to deliver superior service and ensure that customers fully realize the value of their investment. Additionally, this partnership enhances our ability to support manufacturers across many industries with the latest advancements in precision measurement, offering unparalleled value and reliability in the field,” he states.

As he joins the conversation, Steve Rosso, Vice President of Product Management, highlights MSI Viking’s commitment to advancing Smart Factory technologies: “Manufacturers are increasingly investing in solutions that enable in-line measurement, digitalization, and automation to stay competitive. Technologies such as machine vision, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and machine learning are at the forefront of this transformation, helping to address critical challenges like skills shortages while driving throughput and productivity.

“At MSI Viking, we see these technologies as more than tools – they’re enablers of real-time quality control, full traceability, and actionable insights that optimize manufacturing processes. Only with data from accurate measurement can companies implement processes to consistently produce high-quality products. This forms the foundation for smarter, more efficient processes that deliver superior results.

“Metrology is foundational to this journey, acting as both a scientific discipline and an enabling technology that promotes quality across the entire manufacturing process. Whether it’s through automating part handling or enabling digital twins, precision measurement empowers manufacturers to achieve the level of excellence today’s market demands.” Precision engineered components from MSI Viking

Alongside cutting-edge technologies, MSI Viking has also invested in new headquarters poised to support its wide scope of operations. “Opened in September 2024, our new facility triples our capacity and features state-of-the-art product demonstration and training areas, which we will be rolling out in the coming months. In addition, it boasts precision metrology labs designed to maintain strict environmental controls and minimize measurement uncertainties. This move was necessitated by our outgrowing the building we had been operating in since the late 1990s, with space constraints becoming apparent about five years ago. Beyond positioning us for continued growth and innovation, this new facility should make a significant difference in our throughput and turnaround times for our service offerings,” Dan elaborates.

With this increased capacity, 2025 promises to be an exciting year for MSI Viking. Steve shares insights into the companies’ plans and priorities for the new year. “As part of our growth strategy, we aim not only for organic growth in sales and services but also expansion through acquisitions, as it is often a faster route to market for us. To kick off the new year, we have acquired a calibration lab that will get us to market more quickly. This acquisition fits well with our general offering as we provide in-lab calibration typically complemented by the sale of high-precision measuring instrumentation. We are now finalizing a confidential transaction and will soon shift our focus on integrating that newly acquired company into MSI Viking. Leveraging experience from our past successful integrations, we are well-prepared to ensure our cultures assimilate rapidly and our processes are streamlined. Such integration can be challenging for any organization, regardless of size, so having a concrete method to approach this transition is crucial.

“Furthermore, 2025 will be marked by a couple of new relationships. One such partnership is with Hexagon, whom we partnered with because it is a global leader in precision coordinate metrology, but also because it involves us in the post-sale servicing of its equipment. This was a key contractual consideration for us and provided the motivation for fostering a strong partnership between our organizations. The second relationship is with Waygate Technologies, a company specializing in advanced X-ray and computed tomography (CT) systems for industrial applications including a significant focus on dimensional metrology. Given that this relationship has only just started, we will dedicate significant attention to bringing Waygate Technologies’ products to market throughout this year,” he concludes.

Beyond its renowned measurement technologies and services, MSI Viking shines through strategic partnerships that empower manufacturers in their pursuit of precision and quality.
