As we enter the latter half of 2025, Manufacturing Today sits down with Rhys Davies, Managing Director at IG Doors, to learn more about the company’s recent and future developments as it continues to grow and prosper. Rhys begins our conversation by providing some insight into IG Doors’ background.
“IG Doors has been designing and manufacturing high quality doors for the UK social housing and home improvement markets for over 40 years. The business was established in 1983, and in 2013, we became a part of the Hörmann Group – a German family business and one of the largest door manufacturers in the world,” he shares. “Hörmann Group has over 100 production and sales facilities across Europe, North America and Asia, producing high quality doors, gates and fences for residential and industrial applications all over the world, so becoming a part of the Group was a big transition for IG Doors. Being a part of this large Group has given us huge access to significant resources to broaden our network, strengthen our product and fuel our growth. Since then, IG Doors has grown to be one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of composite steel and fire doors.”
Five years ago, IG Doors embarked upon a new era with, perhaps, one of its biggest developments to date: the opening of its new factory. Having invested an incredible £60 million into its development, the facility boasts a 1km state-of-the-art production line, along with the latest technologies and automations to bolster its manufacturing processes.
“The new factory was a huge investment for us. It’s a 200,000 square foot facility, highly automated with advanced CNC machines, robotic processes and model assembly lines with smart technologies built in,” Rhys describes. “We’ve implemented new digital systems to attract production data, monitor machine performance and manage workflow in real time. It’s all deep-driven to help us identify efficiencies, downtimes, and to maintain our quality standards electronically so that we can quickly pivot to address changes in customer demands. A big part of our strategy is centered around staying competitive and consistently delivering high-quality products, and the new automated factory is helping us to drive this further.”
The launch of this new factory marks a major milestone in IG Doors’ journey as it fully transitions to solely UK-based manufacturing. Today, the company proudly manages all its processes under one roof, from the initial design of its products through to its research and development, testing, manufacturing, and engineering operations. In addition, IG Doors now sources all its raw materials from UK suppliers, as opposed to importing them from Asia as it did previously. This provides various strategic advantages for IG Doors; whilst being beneficial to the UK economy and its workforce, it also eliminates a great deal of supply chain risk for the company, giving it a higher level of control over its network.
Furthermore, this quality elevates another one of IG Doors’ most core values: its commitment to sustainability. For IG Doors, sustainability goes beyond a mere thought: it’s a standard. By localizing its production processes and eliminating the need for Asian imports, the company has been able to significantly decrease its environmental impact. Moreover, with all its doors being Carbon Neutral Certified, its customers can be certain that they’re not only receiving a quality product, but also actively driving a better future.
“We now manufacture everything in the UK rather than from the Far East, which means that all our products are now CO2 neutral as standard. This is a huge step forward for us and I believe that we are the only ones who are offering this standard in the UK,” Rhys explains.
“It’s also been very important to us to have local suppliers. Most of the products that we purchase are sourced locally here in the UK, which is crucial to us and helps to set us aside from our competition. It also gives us a lot more control over the quality of the product, it removes a great deal of supply chain risk and it’s great to be able to support the local workforce in the community as well.”
It’s irrefutable that the recent onslaught of economic difficulties has had a major effect on the UK market, however, IG Doors has continued to grow and succeed, and with the UK government placing an increased emphasis on the new build market, it remains optimistic for the future ahead.
“The markets have been improving significantly in the UK, especially as the reliance on the new build market continues to grow. It’s looking promising for the rest of this year and next year is looking even better,” Rhys affirms.
“Over the course of the next five years, we’ll be looking to develop the business into different markets, and we’re got huge capacity at our factory to support that. We’re also aiming to grow our presence in the trade retail market. It’s an exciting time for us based on our strong growth strategy.”
