Awarded with JLR Global Supplier Award
The annual JLR Global Supplier Conference & Awards 2026 took place on June 18 at JLR’s headquarters in Gaydon, honoring top-performing global partners. VDL Steelweld was proud to be awarded a JLR Global Supplier Excellence Award for 2026. Darren Dowsett, Managing Director at VDL Steelweld UK, and Richard Bracher, Operations Director, were presented with the award by Tobias Moch, Chief Procurement Officer of JLR. Selected from over a hundred shortlisted suppliers, the company was one of only eight suppliers to be awarded by JLR.
“In June 2026, VDL Steelweld were invited, along with 135 other shortlisted companies, to the annual JLR Global Supplier Awards. Within that day, there were five main categories of recognition that were then further shortlisted to four or five nominated suppliers for each category. VDL Steelweld were then proud to win our category of recognition for Environmental Excellence,” Richard comments. “Although Darren and I were lucky enough to accept this award in person, we’re both certainly aware that we’re just a figurehead for our organization. This award all comes down to our teams’ continuous hard work, integrity, and the outstanding way that they support, guide, and manage JLR as one of our key customers.”
“Without the excellent ongoing support of our staff and key supplier partner, we just wouldn’t be able to succeed, so this award is a recognition to our entire network,” Darren adds. “Strength through co-operation is our company logo and our biggest strength is our employees.”
Key success factors
To commemorate this achievement, Darren and Richard share more key success factors behind VDL Steelweld’s operational approach. The two begin by offering insight into how the company is remaining adaptable in the current tumultuous economic climate.
“The world is certainly shrinking within the automotive sector. We’re seeing significant competition from Asia, and it’s difficult for UK companies to compete one-on-one,” Richard says. “Because of this, we’re currently taking advantage of lower-cost offshore resources, led and managed by local engineers. We’re making the organization agile enough to react to changes in requirements and customer requests, while maintaining the highest quality output. It’s taken us a while to get the correct balance of value-added expertise with bulk engineering, but we believe that, over the last ten years, we’ve developed the right mix to give our customers what they need both commercially and technically.”
“In addition, we’ve specifically developed our competencies within our own companies in these regions, rather than relying on external subcontracted work. It’s helped us to keep our high standards of quality control internally,” Darren affirms.

“We all have responsibilities for our local customers,” Darren elaborates. “Our entities are established around them. Typically, we support a small number of key customers and support and follow them across the world. For example, we established our entity in Slovakia because JLR have a large production facility there. It means that we can collaborate with all our regional headquarters, ready to call on their strengths and expertise when we need it.”
Digital innovation
Alongside its customer-focused global presence, VDL Steelweld continues to invest heavily in the technologies shaping the future of manufacturing. Richard explains how the company’s long-standing commitment to digital innovation is helping customers prepare for the next generation of automation.
“As automation within the automotive sector has continued to improve, we’ve been developing Industry 4.0 and virtual commissioning for around 15 years – particularly in terms of simulating factories and throughput,” he says. “The next leap for us would be intuitive automation. It’s not quite there yet, but technology moves quickly within the automotive sector, and we’re certainly receiving an increasing number of requests for more autonomous solutions.”
Next chapter
While advancing automation remains central to VDL Steelweld’s vision, technology is only one part of the company’s long-term strategy. Richard and Darren conclude our conversation by discussing how sustainable growth, market diversification, and investment in people will underpin the next chapter of the business.
“We’re aiming towards sustainable, steady growth. There are certainly automation opportunities across many sectors within the manufacturing industry – both in the UK and beyond – that we’re not currently taking full advantage of, so that’ll certainly be a growth area for us,” Richard reveals. “We’re also committed to bringing in the next generation of engineers, and we’ll continue to add more young engineers to our team.”
“With all of the volatility and instability in the industry at the moment, our main focus is around stability – on securing and retaining what we already have,” Darren emphasizes. “We’ve managed to retain our dedicated, loyal workforce – over 80 percent of whom have been with us for more than five years – so we pride ourselves on being able to give our employees an environment where they’re happy to work.”
