Established in 1994, Cultech’s story is one born of true innovation. The company was founded in South Wales by Nigel and Sue Plummer – two passionate microbiologists with a bold vision to change the future of nutritional supplements for the healthcare industry. Driven by their deep scientific expertise and strong regulatory experience, Nigel and Sue have been heavily involved in the company’s research and development processes since day one and, over the course of three decades, Cultech has grown into an internationally respected leader in premium supplement manufacturing, exporting to more than 30 countries and operating across Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Americas. With dedicated capabilities for probiotics and VMS, and expertise spanning capsules, tablets, powders, sachets, stickpacks, and liquids, the company combines cutting-edge research with advanced production technologies to deliver standout formulations. At the heart of its operations is Lab4, Cultech’s proprietary probiotic consortium, backed by 30 years of continuous research with more than 35 clinical trials, over ten PhD programs and numerous in vivo and in vitro publications.

Flexible production capabilities mean both small and large-scale projects are handled with equal efficiency and care and places innovation at the heart of its long success. In addition, the company’s collaborative programs, including research initiatives with leading academic institutions such as Cambridge University, have supported the development of new consumer healthcare solutions and strengthened quality standards, contributing to achievements such as its ISO9000, BRC and NSF certifications.

Through a powerful combination of research scientists and formulation, Cultech proudly provides fully integrated manufacturing services with unique formulations, innovative presentations, and high-quality finished products. As global interest in supplements continues to grow, the organization is well-positioned to leverage its scientific credentials and intellectual property to successfully compete on an international scale. Manufacturing Today sits down with Pablo Abrahams, General Manager of Cultech, to dive deeper in the company’s R&D processes and uncover what its next chapters might hold.

“We have a comprehensive R&D team and have conducted 35 double-blind placebo controlled human clinical trials over the last 25 years into probiotics and gut health,” Pablo begins. “These trials have been supported by continuous in vitro and in vivo studies, resulting in the publication of over 100 peer reviewed scientific publications.

“We stay on top of the latest trends in research and product development by staying close to our customers and listening to the demands of the marketplace. We also attend scientific conferences and trade exhibitions which provide further insights into growing trends. And sometimes, the team just comes up with great ideas!”

From initial concept through to final formulation, Cultech’s New Product Development (NPD) team develops and refines each product to meet precise customer requirements. In the NPD laboratory, samples are created and rigorously tested to ensure everything from taste and flavor to active ingredient recovery performs exactly as it should. Every detail is scrutinized at lab scale, including bulk density, powder flow, particle size, capsule fill, water activity, and probiotic viability, to guarantee manufacturing success. For more complex or novel formulations, production trials are carried out on full-scale equipment, proactively identifying and resolving challenges before first batch manufacture begins. By combining personal service with extensive stock holdings of raw materials and packaging, Cultech delivers seamless, end-to-end manufacturing solutions for every client and criteria.

“We recently launched our Lab4 probiotics as raw material blends. Normally we manufacture products for our customers containing Lab4, but in certain circumstances it’s helpful to just provide Lab4 as a raw material, such as in cases where it’s more difficult to export as finished goods or if the customer has a preferred local manufacturer. By offering our Lab4 in this way, we hope to widen our offering,” Pablo explains.

“Additionally, we recently launched a new brand called ProVen Vitamins. In this range we have delicious chewable multivitamin tablets which provide all the essential vitamins. This is an experiential brand and caters for those that want great tasting products that deliver nutritional value.”

As these operations continue to scale, Cultech proceeds to power ahead through strategic investments at every level of the business, particularly in R&D and continuous improvement initiatives. For example, major capital investment in state-of-the-art manufacturing – from encapsulation and tableting to conveyor-based bottling and sachet systems – has significantly expanded the company’s capacity at its Port Talbot site.

Alongside this drive for operational excellence, Cultech is equally focused on building a responsible, future-ready business, ensuring that its manufacturing scalability is matched by meaningful progress in sustainability and ethical standards.

“We have just achieved certification to SMETA 4 Pillars which demonstrates our commitment to sustainability and ethical business practices. We have also introduced solar panels to generate renewable power,” Pablo details. “Using the UN Sustainability goals as our framework, we set our ESG objectives annually to continually develop our sustainability and ethical improvement plans.”

Now in its 32nd year in business, Cultech remains true to the scientific curiosity and pioneering spirit that first sparked its journey. With proven clinical credentials, proprietary innovation in Lab4, expanding global reach, and continued investment in advanced manufacturing and sustainability, the company is progressing the future of healthcare on an international scale. By championing rigorous research processes, flexible production, and responsible business practices, it’s evident that Cultech will continue to set the benchmark for quality in the supplements industry for many more decades to come.

“2026 looks to be a promising year for us as we seek to continually develop the international expansion of our ProVen brands, and to further roll-out the launch of our Lab4 ingredient. In addition, there is high demand for our premium quality manufacturing services and innovative new product development solutions,” Pablo affirms, concluding our conversation.

“We have an aggressive five-year growth plan, and expect to at least double our turnover, cementing the importance of our manufacturing facility in Port Talbot, South Wales, to the global supplements industry.”
