SisuDiesel drives the industry

Throughout the agricultural industry SisuDiesel has a reputation for producing state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly, durable and efficient, electronically managed diesel engines for a broad variety of applications.

Through continuous development and by using the latest technology, the company, which is a part of the US AGCO organisation – one of the largest agricultural manufacturers in the world – aims to supply excellent, marketleading products to farming professionals across the globe.

SisuDiesel was originally established in 1942 in Finland as a manufacturer of engines for use during the Second World War. Subsequently the company focused purely on the development of superior quality diesel engines, with its first in-house designed and built model being launched in 1947. Today the business manufactures diesel engines, gears, and diesel generators and pumps, for customers including Massey Ferguson, Valtra, Komatsu Forest, Kalmar, Logset, CNH, and Challenger.

Operating as part of AGCO, which also owns Massey Ferguson and has factories around the world, has significantly benefited SisuDiesel, as Juha Tervla, marketing director at the business explains: “We have achieved very steady growth since 2004, with engine production levels reaching 35,000 units at the end of last year. The main share of this growth comes directly from AGCO, which sees agricultural engine production as a core business, and has consequently invested heavily in the development of our site and capabilities. For example, in recent years it has invested around 30 million euros into the manufacturing of key components, engine assembly and R&D facilities, including state-of-the-art automated engine assembly lines.”

As an engine manufacturer SisuDiesel takes its environmental responsibility extremely seriously, ensuring that its engines meet the stringent, industry-wide emissions regulations: “SisuDiesel works hard to comply with all of the current offroad emissions legislations in the industry, with our development programmes already looking at the next stages that are due in 2011,” says Juha. “Not only do we strictly follow these regulations in our engine development, we have also looked at other environmentally friendly options, including the possibility of using 100 per cent bio-diesel in all of our engines.”

The company’s latest engines, the Citius series fulfil the emissions requirements of EU stage IIIA and EPA Tier III in the US. Juha elaborates: “The development and production of the Citius family took place between 2005 and 2007 depending upon the size and variant of the engine. The engine meets all of the requirements in the industry, with all units above 75 kW being equipped with the very latest state-of-the-art Common Rail Technology.”

Desigens specifically for use in demanding off-road machinery applications, the Citius three, four and six cylinder engines combine the durability, reliability and excellent torque found in all Sisu engines, with a number of improvements over previous designs. These include increased power density, considerably faster engine response time, unbeatable torque at low speeds, reduced noise levels and excellent reliability. Many of these improvements are the result of features such as higher injection pressures, precise electronic injection control and highly effective charge air-cooling, which all play an important role in emissions control and limitation.

During the last months of 2007 the business introduced the new Citius SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) engine, developed to be the most economic off-road diesel engine in the world. When combined with SISUTRONIC electronic engine management system the SCR after-treatment solution, which will be essential for meeting the strictest emissions limits at the turn of the next decade, offers considerable improvements to previous engines. Traditionally successfully managing engine emissions has involved carefully balanging optimum fuel economy and emission reduction, but this compromise is eliminated with the new engine.

For example, the Citius SCR features improved power and torque characteristics and a faster throttle response, yet offers a considerable reduction in fuel consumption. In turn, this results in a large ruduction in CO2 emissions, whilst the optimum combustion properties of the engine means that particulate emissions only reach a quarter of the specified limit of the StageIIIA regulations.

Impostantly for customers, the improved design also decreases operating costs by around tem per cent, whilst no additional servicing is needed for the SCR technology. “During 2008 an extension of the SCR engine range will be launched following the final field tests,” Juha comments. “We believe that with this the power range will be widened remarkably, giving us further opportunities in the market.”

With these developments, and the commitment of a strong and influential parent company, Juha has every reason to be confident about the future. The company continues tominvest in its manufacturing capabilities with the aim of increasing its production capacity, and gathering more orders in a flourishing market. “The majority of our customers are still in the agricultural market, which remains very good at present, with the main drivers for us being the increased proces of grain and the production of biofuels. However, our fresh engine strategy up to 2012 means that we will see double the current engine production across our two factories in the coming years,” he concludes.
